The 63-year-old will produced in a Hisar court on Thursday, superintendent of police, Panipat Satish Balan said on Wednesday. A charge of sedition has been slapped on the godman who had been hiding in ashram for over four days and eluding over 30,000 policemen stationed outside the precincts until he was arrested.
Haryana Police has ruled out any negotiation with the godman citing grievousness of the charges. ‘There is no possibility of negotiations. There is not even any plan. He is accused of serious crimes,’ said Vashisht while addressing a press conference in Chandigarh.
Earlier, intervening in the crisis at Hisar in Haryana, the ministry of home affairs (MHA) on Wednesday evening decided to send paramilitary forces to tackle the poor law and order situation in the area, following the clashes that erupted between Rampal’s supporters and the police. ‘The Central government is sending about 500 paramilitary personnel to Haryana to deal with law and order situation at ‘godman’ Rampal’s ashram,’ said a home ministry official. ‘We are mobilising the force from nearby areas and they will reach the spot soon,’ said the official.
The MHA has responded to an urgent request of the Haryana government for dispatching the personnel to assist the state police which is facing violent resistance to their effort to arrest Rampal. Home minister Rajnath Singh also tweeted on the issue on Wednesday. He said, ‘Spoke to Haryana CM Shri Manohar Lal Khattar over the phone who apprised me of the prevailing situation in Hisar.’
At least 70 devotees of the godman, including ‘private commandos’, who attacked cops on Tuesday, were arrested and produced before the local court. They were sent to judicial custody till 3 December. Those arrested, include son of Rampal and chief volunteer Purushottam Dass, a cousin of the ‘godman’.
Before the arrest, in a report submitted to the home ministry, the Intelligence Bureau described the situation at Rampal’s ashram as tense but expressed warnings that ‘further violence’ could erupt in case police attempt to get the ashram vacated and arrest Rampal.’
After heavy clashes on Tuesday that turned the ashram area into a ‘war zone’, the situation cooled somewhat on Wednesday, even though reports on casualties emerged during the day. Six people, including a child, have died during the action at the Hisar ashram to arrest controversial sect leader Rampal, but the cause of their deaths is yet to be known, Haryana police said on Wednesday.
