This is the second hike within three months post the hiked toll rates from Rs 20 paise to 80 paise per kilometre in January, this year. Unaware about the hike in toll rates, many of the commuters along with locals expressed agitations.
Yamuna Expressway, a high-speed corridor infamous for a series of road accidents in the recent past, has announced to raise toll rates from Rs 10 to Rs 30 for all categories of vehicles. Jaypee Infratech, which operates the toll, raised toll rate for two-wheelers and three-wheelers from Rs 165 to Rs 175, while for cars and jeeps, the rates have gone up from Rs 330 to Rs360 and for light commercial vehicles it has been hiked from Rs 550 to Rs 565. Meanwhile, the toll rates for buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles have not been hiked.
The 165-kilometer long Yamuna Expressway, connecting Greater Noida to Agra, was opened to public in 2012. In January 2015, the government had allowed the hike in toll rates following which, prices had gone up from 10 paise to 80 paise per kilometre.
Jaypee Infratech said that the toll hikes are as per the approved rates and within the allowed annual hike. Under the Indian Toll Act 1851, the state government had formulated Uttar Pradesh Expressway (levy of tolls and fixing of fees and realisation) Rules 2010, stated the basic rates and formulae for annual hike.
Notably, the toll authority, on January 20, had hiked toll rates from Rs 150 to Rs 165 for cars; LCVs, from Rs 500 to Rs 550; buses and trucks, from Rs 1,050 to Rs 1,150; heavy vehicles up to six wheels, from Rs 1,600 to Rs 1,765 and for vehicles with more than 7 tyres, from Rs 2,100 to Rs 2,260.
