The standing committee of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Tuesday ordered an inquiry against commissioner Manish Gupta for availing allowance of Rs 1.25 lakh for setting up camp office at his residence when he was serving as additional commissioner of the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).Raising the matter in the meeting of the standing committee former Mayor of Delhi and presently Leader of Opposition in SDMC Farhad Suri said, ‘Gupta was not eligible to draw the allowance for setting up camp office in the capacity of Additional Commissioner with MCD. The officers of the account department are following pick and choose policy,’ alleged Suri. According to sources with the account department, even the proposal of commissioner of East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) to set up camp office at his residence was turned down on the ground that the rules of Delhi government are not applicable and against the section 89 of the DMC Act. ‘Manish Gupta in the only IAS officer in the three civic bodies who is availing this facility,’ alleged Suri. He further submitted papers to prove that such applications by former additional commissioner Janak Digal was turned down by then MCD commissioner. Suri demanded the matter be referred to Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) for inquiry. Replying the debate SDMC commissioner Manish Gupta said,’ Let the matter be audited by the Chief Municipal Auditor, If he indicts I am ready to refund the money,’. The commissioner is empowered for Rs 1.25 lakh for setting up camp office at residence once in five years and also monthly emoluments for two orderlies. The standing committee chairman Rajesh Gehlot ordered the inquiry by the Chief Municipal Auditor and submit the report to the standing committee.
