The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) is planning to build premium surface car-parking facilities at congested areas to address the area’s concerns.
The civic agency wanted to build normal car-parking facilities at a few busy roads under its jurisdiction. However, traffic police have denied them permission. Manish Gupta, commissioner of SDMC informed that traffic police refused the idea of building normal parking facilities because the place might get over-utilised and lead to unauthorised parking.
The traffic police rather directed the SDMC to build high-premium parking facility which will discourage people to travel by cars and help de-congest the area to some extent.
‘The facility will help the SDMC in a big way to solve the parking mess and de-congest busy lanes. It will also keep a check on unauthorised parking,’ said Gupta. Tariff rates for the proposed facility has not been decided yet. But sources reveal that it will be as high as Rs 100 per hour.
The commissioner has forwarded the proposal to Remunerative Project Cell of SDMC. Once it gets the approval of the standing committee and the house, the project will begin in earnest. However, it might be noted here that similar proposals have been rejected by the house in the past due to fear of backlash by public.
A special task force (STF) was constituted by Delhi High Court in 2012 on traffic-related issues. The STF pointed out that to solve the traffic and parking woes in the city, people need to be discouraged to use private vehicles. Therefore, it recommended a steep increase in parking tariffs to Rs 10 per half an hour during non-peak hours and additional 50 per cent during peak hours.
