South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) and North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) have begun a demolition drive in their own respective areas on Tuesday. Taking a stern action against unauthorised constructions, SDMC demolished six buildings in south area, six others in mid area and five buildings in Najafgarh respectively. However, the NDMC demolished 21 properties and sealed three properties on Tuesday too.

The demolition drive continued in Sadar Paharganj and Rohini Zone also. It was undertaken by the engineering department of the civic bodies with the help of local police. The latter was included in the team to avoid unwanted situations.

NDMC office bearers reinforced that unauthourised constructions could not be tolerated since it puts extra burden on the civic system and the municipal machinery. As per a NDMC official, such constructions were illegal. The purpose of this action is to deter people from illegal constructions and curb lawlessness in the area. Such actions will encourage people to construct buildings only after procuring a proper sanction plan for the proposed building.

SDMC officials said that people take municipal laws for granted. Even educated people do not take municipal laws seriously. It also creates a broad difference between the number of buildings in the area and the data maintained with SDMC. He further added that such stern actions would continue in the area on and off.
