SDMC cross voting: BJP orders inquiry

Update: 2014-05-03 00:05 GMT
While the BJP has announced an internal inquiry into allegations of cross voting by its councillors in the recently held mayoral elections at South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), party leaders are still unclear on how they should go about to conduct the investigation.

Interestingly, votes for mayoral polls were cast under secret ballot which has made it very difficult for BJP to find out who voted against the party. The option left before them is to identify the councillors on the basis of assumptions.

The BJP leaders in the civic body are also well aware of the difficult task ahead of them but they are optimistic that they’ll find the culprits.

‘We know it is not at all easy to identify who all voted in favour of the opposition party. But we are very sure that culprits will be brought to book soon and action will be taken against them,’ said Satish Upadhyay, chairman of SDMC’s standing committee.
The BJP won the mayor’s seat by just one seat, but lost the post of deputy mayor by a margin of 13 votes.
