Union Minister of Power and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal on Monday dedicated world’s largest street lights replacement completed programme to the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC).
Around 2 lakh conventional street lights have been replaced by the energy efficient LED street lights in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation under the Street Lighting National Programme being implemented by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited under the Ministry of Power.
Goyal after inaugurating the formal commercial operation of the project also launched the second phase of the project for installation of 75,000 more LED lights in the SDMC areas with a special focus on the installation in parks, at dark spots and replacement of the high mast lights.
He also launched a dedicated SLNP app for immediate resolution of the complaints about faulty street lights. With this, the SDMC has put in place a four level complaint redressal mechanism.
The SDMC Commissioner P K Goel said that the SDMC has become the first civic body in the Capital city to replace around two lakh old street lights with LED lights and ensuring a saving of 6 crore 10 lakh units of electricity per year, resulting in saving of around 54 per cent in electricity bill, a saving of Rs 124 crore in the project period and curb release of Co2 gas in the atmosphere by 44,000 tonne per year.
