Gauri Kumari, a 13-year-old resident of A-B 103, Jawahar Mohalla, Patparganj, Delhi-91, has been denied re-admission to class VIII by the principal of Government Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Patparganj, in utter violation of the provisions of Section 4 of Right Of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.

Gauri had personally approached Ashok Aggarwal, a social jurist on 6 May expressing her concern against the school.

Aggarwal says that Gauri is eager to study, but the neighbourhood school has denied her admission allegedly because of  ‘non-availability of seat’.

‘Its remarkable that despite facing hardships on many fronts, Gauri wants to continue with her studies,’ says Aggarwal, adding, ‘Gauri had earlier been studying in Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Patparganj. She was a student of class VI at the school in the year 2010-11’.

In July 2010, Gauri’s family was faced with severe powerty, which forced her mother to not only withdraw her from the school, but to send her to an orphanage in Haridwar where she had been staying for the past 2 years. There was no provision for Gauri’s  education there.

‘Gauri’s mother recently realised that she should bring Gauri back home, and afterwards approached the Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Patparganj, to get her readmitted to class VIII.

‘However, the principal of the school denied her admission, saying that there were no vacant seats,’ says Aggarwal.

‘It is very unfortunate that the principal of the school has failed to realise that under the terms of Section 4 of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, Gauri has a legal right for re-admission,’ added Aggarwal.
