Hearing the plea of Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa seeking reinstatement of Special Public Prosecutor Bhawani Singh in disproportionate assets case against her in a Bangalore Special court, the Supreme Court on Friday summoned the original records of the appointment of SPP, who was withdrawn by the Karnataka government in her case. She is facing the trial in a disproportionate assets case that relates to the period when she was chief minister 1991-96 involving Rs.66 crore. The trial in the case was shifted outside Chennai by the apex court in 2003 to ensure free and fair trial.

The Tamil Nadu chief minister has sought reinstatement of SPP and extenstion to the trial court judge, who is retiring on 30 September, on the ground that it would further delay the conclusion of 18-year-old trial.

A bench comprising of Justice BS Chauhan and Justice SA Bobde summoned the appointment record of the SPP in the wake of Jaya’s counsel’s submission.
