West Bengal’s law minister Chandrima Bhattacharya on Thursday led a huge crowd of women Trinamool Congress workers in a sit-in demonstration outside the Central Bureau of Investigation’s office to protest the agency’s ‘motivated’ probe of the Rs 2000-crore Saradha scam.
The Trinamool Mahila Congress workers were holding placards and shouting slogans in front of the main gate of the Central Government Office complex in Salt Lake.Bhattacharya, said, ‘The CBI was intentionally trying to divert the course of the probe with a political motivation under the influence of Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre.’
‘The Central Bureau of Investigation is trying the defame our chief minister Mamata Banerjee and the party. The way the probe is being done is not legally tenable. The people of the state would never accept such things,’ she said. A senior Trinamool MP refused to comment on the agency probe.
The CBI recently arrested Rajat Majumdar, former Director General of the State Armed Police and a security consultant of the Saradha Group after he retired. The agency questioned the party’s Rajya Sabha member Srinjoy Bose on Wednesday for several hours. The TMC has suspended party MP Kunal Ghosh, who is behind bars.
Majumdar, who had worked as Director General (Armed Police) in West Bengal, was allegedly associated with Saradha Group, which has been accused of duping thousands of investors with crore of rupees, official sources said. He was arrested by the CBI on Tuesday.
The CBI has registered four FIRs against the Saradha Group in the chit fund scam.
The Supreme Court had handed over the Saradha chit fund scam probe to CBI and asked the state governments to provide all logistical help to the agency’s team investigating the matter.
The CBI has formed a Special Investigating Team (SIT) headed by Joint Director Rajiv Singh also probe the role of some officials of Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and RBI, the sources said.
