Schools under the government of Delhi will serve plant ‘saplings’ to their guests in place of bouquets in their various cultural events and other functions inside their campuses. The decision was taken in a meeting of ‘Eco Clubs’ in government schools across the national Capital with Delhi’s Environment Minister AS Khan on Wednesday.
“Delhi government promoted Eco Clubs in schools across the national Capital and agreed to promote the idea of encouraging use of different kinds of saplings in place of bouquets during various celebrations in their respective campuses,” said a senior officers of Delhi government.
The idea of greeting the guests with saplings of herbal plants, ornamental plants, and tree saplings for promoting the habit of greening the city, rather than presenting bouquets was welcomed in the meeting and was passed unanimously.
Khan also desired that the schools should also present each of its students a sapling on their birthdays and encourage them to plant the same which would be helpful to inculcate the habit of growing a fondness for plants.
It is important to mention that Delhi government gives a grant of Rs 20,000 per annum to run Eco Clubs in government schools to create awareness about environment issues among the students.
“A number of teachers attended the meeting and shared their ideas and experiences with the minister. During the discussions, a number of initiatives were highlighted which could serve as illustrative examples for other schools to follow,” added the officer. The minister also asked the schools to send various innovative ideas concerning the Environment and Pollution to Environment Department for their wide spread adoption by other schools and society at large.
