Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha (LBSRSV), a deemed university under the centre teaching Sanskrit language, has had five acting V-Cs in the last three years, but not a regular V-C.
Bhaskar Mishra, dean, faculty of education of Vidyapeetha, was appointed as the acting V-C on 13 May, 2014, just three days before the final result was declared. Before Mishra, Ramesh Kumar Pandey, the senior most professor, was given the charge to head the university on 5 February 2014.
The other three V-Cs who headed the premier Sanskrit varsity are - Usha Rani Kapoor, Radha Vallabh Tripathi and Bhavendra Jha.
The classical language centre has moved several proposals for appointment of a regular V-C since the then V-C Vachaspati Upadhyaya passed away on 11 July 2011, but HRD ministry failed to pick one.
On the issue of regular V-C, Bhaskar Mishra told Millennium Post that the varsity had moved a proposal to the HRD ministry for appointment of a regular VC in February 2013.
Apart from having a permanent V-C for the last three years, Mishra also pointed fingers at some problems that the deemed varsity is struggling with. The LBSRSV is facing shortage of teachers as there are only 79 professors against the sanctioned strength of 123, Mishra added.
It is pertinent to mention here that central government has written to chief secretaries as well as education secretaries to organise Sanskrit saptah in schools across the country. The CBSE-affiliated schools have been asked to celebrate Sanskrit week from 7 August to 13 August to popularise the language.
‘CBSE has developed textbooks for classes from VI to XII and workbooks and support materials like teachers’ manual, resource manual and audio cassette for Class IX. It has also conducted about 50 teachers’ training programme and seminars across the country to orient the teachers in communicative approach to teaching Sanskrit, HRD minister Smriti Irani had said.
In a boost to Modi government’s idea, the Madras high court on Wednesday declined to entertain a PIL against the circular asking CBSE-affiliated schools to conduct Sanskrit week celebrations. The Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha was established on 8 October 1962. The University Grants Commission granted the status of a deemed university to the varsity in November 1987.
