SAIL unit ASP develops steel for Agni Missile

Update: 2016-09-08 23:49 GMT
Alloy Steels Plant (ASP), Durgapur, a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited, has successfully produced indigenously a speciality low alloy steel as a low cost alternative to maraging steel for use in outer motor casing of Agni Missile.

This steel has a unique combination of ultra high strength and high fracture toughness and meets the intended purpose in missile manufacture.

The steel was melt and continuously cast at Alloy Steels Plant for the first time in the country meeting the stringent quality requirements followed by rolling and annealing at Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP).

About 106 tonnes of these plates were supplied by Rourkela Steel Plant to Defence for further heat treatment and fabrication to produce outer motor casings for Agni missile.

Such an effort by Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is a booster to “Make in India” campaign for indigenous production of speciality products to meet Defence needs.
