Safdarjung hospital’s burn dept in shambles

Basic infrastructure seems to be lacking in the premier hospitals of the national capital, and yet  officials are not paying any heed to it.

As an example, the ceiling of the operation theatre (OT) of Burn and Plastic department in Safdarjung hospital is leaking, and during rains, copious amounts of  water drips on the floor.

In the hospital, two dedicated OT’s have been given to Burn and Plastic department. Of these two, only one is operational. In this working OT, only one patient can be attended at a time and others are kept waiting even during emergencies.

Attendants of the patients also complained about the non-working  of various equipment.

Lata Devi, an attendant said, ‘Water spills all over the floor during the rains. It makes the floor slippery and dangerous.’

Another kin of a patient, Sunita, said, ‘Stray animals such  as cats and even birds can be seen walking on the distorted roofs of the Burn department.’

However, the officials concerned refused to make a statement.

In addition to this, the centralised AC in the Burn department does not work, which makes the place suffocating. The blocked drainage system in the Plastic OT adds to the pain.

According to sources, some 6-7 years ago, an amount of about Rs 33 crore was spent to renovate the OT, but the present condition tells a different story.
