Sacked driver held for Ghaziabad murders

Update: 2013-05-24 23:19 GMT
Ghaziabad police has arrested the driver for the murder of seven members of a family in Ghaziabad on Tuesday night.  Satish Chandra Goel (65), a businessman, his wife Manju (62), son Sachin (40), daughter in-law Rekha (38) and three grandchildren, Megha (13), Neha (10) and Aman (7) were found with their throats slit at their home in the Nai Basti area of the city on Wednesday. The accused, 22-year-old Rahul Soni has told the police that he single-handedly killed the seven members of the family  because Satish Chandra Goel had recently removed him from service and accused him of theft.

Soni was arrested on Wednesday night from the Bazaria colony where he used to live and jewellery, blood-stained clothes and a rope allegedly used by the accused in the murder were recovered from his possession. During interrogation, the accused told the police that a few days back the family members accused him of stealing Rs 4.5 lakh and removed him from service, after which he planned the murder. Goel had hired him as driver around six months back and sacked him 10 days back, allegedly for stealing cash from the house.

'Soni’s family had stopped all interactions with him because of his bad behaviour  and he was introduced to Geol by his former driver,' said Shiv Shankar Yadav, S P (City), Ghaziabad.

'He has denied the involvement of any other person in the murders, but we are interrogating him further as it is difficult to believe that a single person murdered seven people in one night and took away cash and valuables from the house. We will apply for his police remand,' added Yadav.

On Thursday, the accused was presented in court from where he was sent to 14 days  judicial custody.

According to the police, the accused did not enter the house from any door, but climbed in through a window from the roof and also injured his leg in the process. He reportedly hid himself and waited for nearly an hour, when he found some members of the Goel family, including the children, present on the terrace. When the children went down, he first killed Goel’s daughter-in-law Rekha and one of the children, Megha. When Goel’s son Sachin came up on hearing their cries, Rahul killed him as well.

To ensure that Sachin was killed, Rahul slit the victim's throat and later stabbed the three children several times. The accused has further revealed that after this he stabbed Goel. Goel’s wife, Manju, was the last one to be killed, before Soni escaped from the house with the jewellery. The forensic team had found a prints of a shoe at the crime scene which will be matched with Rahul's shoe, which has also been recovered.

The police have also recovered the knife used in the multiple murder. The post-mortem report has revealed that the family members had received multiple injuries.
