S S Mohanty is new President of Indian Institute of Metals

S S Mohanty, Director (Technical) with additional charge of  (Projects & Business Planning) Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has taken over as the President of the Indian Institute of Metals for 2015-16  at its 69th  AGM held in Kolkata.

 The Indian Institute of <g data-gr-id="26">Metals ,</g> a premier metallurgical body conceived in 1945  was inaugurated by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the then, the Minister for Industry and Supply in 1947. It presently has about 11,000 members <g data-gr-id="23">drawn</g> from Academia, R&D to Nuclear Space-Defence-Centres- Associations in <g data-gr-id="24">area</g> of Ferrous, Non-Ferrous & Metals Science. Major producers both ferrous and <g data-gr-id="21">non ferrous</g> are members of Indian Institute of Metals. 

 The activities of the institute include mineral beneficiation, extraction, fabrication, heat treatment, finishing as well as practical and theoretical aspects of <g data-gr-id="28">metallurgy</g> of all ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys. Ceramics and other disciplines and technologies allied to metallurgical problems also come under the scope of the Institute. The Institute has developed relations with 18 Societies and Institutes spread over 15 nations and is contributing tremendously to the growth of the metallurgical industry.

 Mohanty started his career from Rourkela Steel Plant as a Management Trainee and has worked in various steel plants of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), before moving to Corporate Office as Director (Technical), he has served as the Managing Director of Bokaro Steel Plant.
