Russian woman injured in acid attack in Varanasi

A 23-year-old Russian national was injured in an acid attack allegedly carried out by her boyfriend, following a quarrel between them, on Friday, police said.

The woman was rushed to Sir Sunder Lal Hospital of BHU, where she is undergoing treatment for injuries on her body and face, SSP Akash Kulhary said, adding that the accused, Siddharth, is on the run. The incident occurred in the Nand Nagar colony in the Lanka police station area, where the woman was living as a paying guest in a house for the past few months, he said.

During her stay, she came close to the landlord’s son Siddharth, a student at BHU, the SSP said. “He was unhappy over the woman’s decision to return to Russia. They had a quarrel over the issue, after which Siddharth threw acid on her,” he said. Siddharth’s mother heard her cries and rushed her to the hospital. An FIR has been registered against Siddharth, the police said.
