Even as the number of houses increase in Delhi with the rising population, it has come to light that number of property tax payers have come down drastically as compared to last year.

It is estimated that there are around 3 lakh houses in Delhi. While in 2012-13, 9,87,009 number of houses paid property tax; in 2013-14, only 9,76,078 paid their tax resulting in the loss of revenue for the three corporations. All the three civic bodies in the capital had appealed to citizens to pay their property tax on-time through advertisements. But it seems that the widespread campaign had failed to enthuse city dwellers.

According to statistics available with Millennium Post, as many as 11,000 people did not pay their property tax costing corporations to the tune of Rs 40 crores. The North Corporation was the worst hit. The tax for 4,762 properties was not paid in North Corporation followed by East Corporation with 4,702 establishments and South with 1,467 structures.

The residents of Delhi may not be interested in paying property taxes but the number of people paying their taxes online has gone up. In 2013-14, a record 64 per cent of people paid their property tax online, while in 2012-13 only 58 per cent paid it through the internet. The South Corporation leads the charge with 71 per cent of its population paying tax online followed by 62 per cent and 58 per cent for East and North Corporations, respectively.
