The assailants were armed with small arms and knives and came in two stolen vehicles. The whole operation took place within six minutes and the assailants drove off in the same car in which the victims were driving. The assailants were yet to be identified till the time of going to the press.
The businessman who was targeted is Rakesh Kumar Kalra. ‘The CDRs of the driver and three associates accompanying Kalra were taken out to identify the possibility of their involvement,’ an official said.
The incident was reported to police at around 9.30 am when Kalra, a property dealer in Greater Kailash was going to Karol Bagh via ITO in Honda City (HR 26 AH 1422) with three associates and the driver Subodh. Mid way, when they crossed Moolchand flyover during the peek hours, a silver-coloured Maruti Wagon R (UP 14 BJ 4610) car overtook them.
‘The driver of Wagon R applied emergency brakes as a result the driver of Honda City could not avert the collision and the car dashed into Wagon R,’ a police official said quoting the victim.
The occupants of Wagon R engaged Kalra and his associates in an argument and in the meantime, another car — Hyundai Verna (HR 26 BQ 1105) stopped behind Honda City. Two armed assailants got out from the car and at gunpoint pushed the occupants of Honda City out and drove the car away with cash kept in two bags. Others fled in Verna, leaving the Wagon R on the crime scene. Police said, two suspects came in Verna and there were three assailants in the Wagon R.
‘The whole incident was executed within six minutes and the victims made a call to the PCR after 15 minutes,’ the official added. During investigation, it was learnt that the Wagon R was a stolen vehicle with the case registered at Jahangirpuri police station on 24 January. An hour after the incident, at around 10.30 am, the Verna car was found abandoned in Defence Colony near Jangpura Metro Station.
It was learnt that the vehicle was registered in the name of a woman at an address of DLF Gurgaon. When a team reached the mentioned address, it was found to be fake.
Around four and a half hours after the robbery, the Honda City was also found parked at Barapullah flyover near JLN stadium with two empty bags lying on the seat. ‘A third car was also used by the criminals to avoid getting noticed,’ the official said.
P Karunakaran, deputy commissioner of police (south-east) said, ‘We are verifying the source of the huge amount and are questioning Kalra and the driver. So far it was learnt that Kalra sold some property and was going to deposit the amount in a bank.’
‘Kalra is also under scanner due to huge amount he was carrying with him. He is a property dealer but has not sold his own property so there are several questions behind carrying the cash,’ sources told Millennium Post.
Investigators are ascertaining if an insider, who was aware of the deal, was involved in the robbery. The sequence of events as narrated by Kalra would also be verified. ‘Based on the prior information about the route map and the deal, the robbery was planned,’ the official added.
