A retired official of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and his 11-year-old grandson were mowed down by a speeding private bus, ferrying schoolchildren in the Anand Vihar area, on Sunday.

The police said the incident took place around 1 pm when the bus, going from Ghaziabad to Anand Vihar, rammed a scooter at the red light.

Shrichand, 62, and his grandson Krish were returning to their home in Anand Vihar on the scooter. The police took the victims to a nearby hospital, where they were declared brought dead.

The police said the errant bus driver and conductor abandoned the vehicle and managed to flee. A police official, close to the probe, said the vehicle was impounded and efforts were on to apprehend the errant bus driver and conductor. A case has been registered at the Anand Vihar police station.

They added that some schoolchildren were sitting in the bus when the accident took place. The police said parents of the children had hired the private bus on Sunday morning due to Mathematics exam at school. The police informed the parents of the children, who were inside the bus, and another bus was arranged for them.

Police said Krish and his mother had recently come to visit his grandparents from Chennai.
