City witnessed huge traffic jams on Sunday due to a Tazia procession by Shia Muslim community from Imambara in Pahari Bhojla to Karbala in Jorbagh. The procession started around 9 am and reached Karbala by the evening. Buses and other vehicles were diverted depending on the position of the religious procession.
The procession went via Matia Mahal, Jama Masjid chowk, Chawri Bazar, Hauz Qazi chowk, Ajmeri Gate and Paharganj bridge in old Delhi. Then it proceeded to Chelmsford Road, Connaught Place outer circle, Parliament Street, Krishi Bhawan roundabout, Raisina Road to reach Vijay Chowk. It went towards south Delhi via Krishna Menon Marg, Tughlaq road, Aurobindo Marg, Jorbagh Road and ultimately reached Karbala.
‘ I faced such a heavy traffic today, near the Ring Road area, for about half an hour. I reached my destination really late,’ said Anil Srivastav, an office goer.
‘There was almost a three- kilometre traffic jam in the ITO area due to the rally, which was beyond the control of traffic police. As I could not board the Metro to office, I had to take my car that took me around two-and-a-half hours to reach office. Generally, it takes only half an hour. My morning schedule for office was disturbed, which affected my working efficiency,’ said Rajiv Shukla, an office goer.
The main intersections of roads, especially Parliament Street, Ring road, Daryaganj, ITO, Tilak marg, Sikandra Marg, Delhi gate, JLN marg, Bhairon marg, Ranjeet Singh flyover along with important areas such as Connaught Place and India Gate faced slow traffic. ‘I was on my way to a movie theatre in south Delhi, but it took me one hour to cross Daryaganj, where it takes just 10 minutes everyday,’ said a college student.
‘I had just left for home from Safdarjung Enclave and got stuck in front of AIIMS for 30 minutes on Ring Road,’ said Manish Arora, a public relations executive, heading towards Connaught Place.
