The state authorities rolled out the red carpet as Xi, the first Chinese president to visit Gujarat, was given a warm welcome. Earlier, Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel, Governor O P Kohli, and senior cabinet ministers of the state welcomed the Chinese President at the Ahmedabad airport.

On Wednesday, India and China signed three MoUs, following which PM Modi and President Xi shared many lighter moments together. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed President Xi and First Lady of China, Peng Liyuan, at the Hyatt Hotel in Ahmedabad, where the duo held formal talks.

The first MoU relates to the setting up of an industrial park in Gujarat. The second MoU is between Guangzhao city and Gujarat for developing a model state. The third MoU signed between Guangzhou city of China and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation relates to sister-city relations.

MoUs for industrial parks, model state and sister cities are expected to help increase cooperation between the two countries in the fields of economy, trade, health, science and technology. President Xi was also impressed by the special exhibition organised at his hotel showcasing the rich Buddhist heritage in Gujarat.

During his visit to Sabarmati Ashram, the Chinese President was showered with gifts of spinning wheel and books on Mahatma Gandhi. Traditional Gujarati food and folk dances on the beautifully decorated Sabarmati River Front was a great experience for the Chinese President and the First Lady.

A cultural programme including Panchal region’s famous Hudo dance, Saurashtra’s Mer dance, Rathwa dance of tribals, the traditional Garba dance with earthen pots on head and Dangi dance were also performed at the Sabarmati River Front to entertain the guests.  President Xi has brought along a high-level business delegation comprising 135 Chinese CEOs.
