Rallying point: Modi, Mulayam both in Gorakhpur, Varanasi today

Update: 2014-01-23 23:22 GMT
Both the BJP and SP will hold their sixth rally in Gorakhpur and Varanasi respectively, nearer to the state of Bihar, setting their agenda for the coming general  elections.

The Congress is also holding a conference of the Youth Congress and NSUI in the state capital on Thursday to cultivate leadership quality among the youth in order to take their assistance in the Lok Sabha elections. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is in Amethi and is expected to hold a ‘Janata Darbar’ on Thursday morning in his constituency to hear the plight and problems of the people.

Narendra Modi’s first ‘Vijay Shankhnad Rally’ in UP in 2014 could set new agenda for the BJP in the state when the BJP’s prime ministerial nominee will share dais with local party MP and influential mahant of the prominent Goraksh Peeth, Yogi Adityanath, who is known for his hardline Hindutva image.

Modi, in his five rallies in Uttar Pradesh so far, has refrained from raising any of  controversial issues related to the saffron brigade. The Gorakhpur rally, however, could mark a turn towards hardcore Hindutva.

Modi will deliver his address from a stage being built, under the supervision of Adityanath, in the shape of Gorakhnath temple. The rally, to be held at Maanbela Ground, has been scheduled so that devotees visiting Gorakhnath for Khichadi Mela from 14 January could join in.

The BJP is expecting a crowd of five lakh people. Unprecedented security would be the other highlight of the rally as Gujarat police has taken the charge of the security and the UP police is just assisting them.

On the other hand the ruling Samajwadi Party has  also geared up for a show of strength against the BJP by holding a rally in Varanasi on Thursday in which party national president Mulayam Singh Yadav and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav will give directives to the party workers.

Another prominent SP leader and state minister Mohammad Azam  Khan, who missed the previous rally at Jhansi, would be the main attraction of the rally for his fiery speech.

This would be sixth rally of Samajwadi Party in last one month and a half. Earlier Samajwadi Party had held rallies in Azamgarh, Bareilly, Mainpuri, Budaun and Jhansi.
