Rains clog capital’s streets, bring traffic to standstill

Heavy rains lashed the national capital on Friday morning, resulting in waterlogging and triggering major traffic snarls. Office-goers had a harrowing time as traffic movement was reduced to a crawl on several arterial roads.

Massive snarls were reported from areas such as ITO, Kashmere Gate, South Extension, Laxmi Nagar, Moolchand underpass, Dhaula Kuan, Azad Marg, Gurudwara Nanakpura, Badarpur, Apsara Border, Yamuna Vihar, Okhla Mandi, Uttamnagar, Kajori Chowk and Nehru Place.
According to the Met department, the city recorded 15.6 mm of rain on Friday.

‘I left my Karol Bagh residence at approximately 8.30 am and it took me close to two-and-a-half hours to reach Lajpat Nagar owing to the waterlogging. Usually it takes only 45-50 minutes’.
Commuters in several parts of the city, especially south Delhi had a harrowing time on the roads.
Traffic movement was slow on the Delhi – Mathura Road near Badarpur, Vasant Kunj, Chattarpur, Mehrauli, Mori Gate, Dhaula Kuan, Masjid Moth, Chirag Delhi, Ring Road near AIIMS and Okhla. Important areas such as Parliament Street, Ring Road, Aurobindo Marg, Badarpur, Ashram Chowk, Saket, M G Road, Azadpur and Kashmere Gate in north Delhi also witnessed traffic chaos.
Delhi Gate near ITO was also waterlogged, triggering traffic chaos, which left commuters stranded for more than two hours. Similar chaos was reported from the Ring Road near AIIMS.

The bus terminus in Sarai Kale Khan was waterlogged so buses had to be parked on the main road.
'Traffic snarls were reported from Mehrauli and the Vasant Kunj area till Chattarpur. It took more than three hours to clear the traffic congestion,' said a traffic official.
'Many traffic signals were not working after the rain, such as the signal in front of Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), Aurobindo Marg intersection, Nehru Place signal, Moolchand and the New Friend's Colony signal, which added to the chaos on the streets,' said a traffic official.
Waterlogging was reported from Moolchand underpass, Paschim Vihar underpass, Punjabi Bagh underpass, Prembari Pul underpass, Dwarka underpass, Raghubir Nagar, Raja Garden and Lala Lajpat Rai Marg.
