To add to the commuters’ woes, traffic signals stopped working at many intersections. Most parts of the city were heavily inundated in South but East Delhi was among the worst-hit and reeled under severe traffic congestions. “Generally it takes 30 minutes to reach Delhi from Noida via DND flyway but today (Tuesday) it was a two-hour long journey. Traffic on this route was out of gear since rain started and poor show of traffic police deepened the crisis,” said Mahesh Saxena, who was traveling from Noida to Safdarjung.
According to the Delhi Traffic Police reports, owing to heavy downpour, heavy traffic was witnessed on NH-24 in the carriageway from Ghazipur towards UP Gate. The stretch between Moolchand underpass towards Ashram witnessed slow vehicular movement due to waterlogging near Maharani Bagh. Waterlogging from Ganesh Nagar to Nirman Vihar (both carriageways), Khajuri Chowk, Hamdard to Vayusenabad, Vijay Chowk Mangal Market Mandadali,Badarpur Border to M B Road near railway underpass, Apollo to Asharm Chowk, Okhla Mandi, under Chirag Dilli flyover, under Savitri Cinema flyover, near Pamposh Enclave bus stand led to halting of vehicular movement. Traffic was also recorded heavy in the carriageway from Shahdara to Apsara Border due to potholes near Chintamani Chowk.
Waterlogging from Wazirabad road to Bhopura near T R Sawhney Showroom, between Apsara Border and Anand Vihar and in front of Nand Nagri Depot resulted in slow vehicular movement.
Traffic was heavy on the carriageway from Peeragarhi to Tikri Border, Nangloi to Najafgarh, under Modi Mill flyover due to waterlogging. Traffic movement was slow on Faiz Road from New Rohtak Road T-Point to Bagga link road due to incessant rain and Kanwar Yatra. Data provided by the three Municipal Corporations of Delhi (MCDs) revealed waterlogging in at least 30 locations in the city with three separate incidents of building collapse and tree falling. In South Delhi, stretches such as the AIIMS flyover, Lajpat Nagar, Defence Colony flyover, and the Badarpur-Mehrauli road were also waterlogged. Stretches such as the AIIMS flyover, Lajpat Nagar, Defence Colony flyover, and the Badarpur-Mehrauli road in South Delhi areas were seen waterlogged after four hours’ rain. The road heading to Aurobindo Marg under the AIIMS flyover witnessed massive waterlogging, causing traffic to crawl at a snail’s pace.
In Noida, traffic from City Centre towards Mahamaya flyover and DND Expressway moved at a snail’s pace due to waterlogging at Shashi Chowk near Golf Course Metro station. In Ghaziabad too, similar scenes were witnessed at Karhera exit, Mohan Nagar intersection, ITS College exit and at Vasundhara underpass below the railway section.
