The heavy rainfall on Thursday became a nightmare for all the commuters. Be it a public transport or private, all of them were stuck in long traffic snarls since evening. From East to West and South to North, the traffic stood for hours and there were no traffic policemen to help them.
Believe it or not, people who had parked their car at Nehru Place Metro station had to crawl for almost one-and-a-half hour just to take a U-turn that is barely 20 meters from the Metro parking. A similar situation was seen in the entire city while the situation worsened in Noida and Gurgaon.
As heavy rain lashed Delhi, traffic slowed down and commuters struggled to navigate in the flooded streets. The problem was catalysed because of the peak hours. At that time people were returning home and they found almost every road including the arterial roads water-logged resulting in the roads becoming narrower and the traffic moving at snail’s pace.
Meanwhile, Twitter and Facebook were buzzing with harried commuters and traffic advises, with people sharing photos of flooded streets. Some also complained directly to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
The traffic crawled throughout the evening on each highway connecting Delhi. Meanwhile, water-logging was reported in many areas, including Rajouri Garden, Shahdara, Jheel, Naryana, Mayapuri and Chirag Dilli, leading to traffic snarls.
Traffic flow was obstructed in many parts, including Rajdhani Park. Vehicles were stuck on water-logged streets in Rajouri Garden and Punjabi Bagh too.In South Delhi, the traffic flow was hampered on NH 8, Greater Kailash, Nehru Place, Chirag Dilli, Mehrauli Road and near Dhaula Kuan.
Palam Vihar and Sector 4 were the worst affected areas in Gurgaon. Outside the DCPs (East) office in Sushant Lok 1, pedestrians found themselves wading through almost knee-deep water, often getting soaked by passing vehicles. Udyog Vihar, Old Gurgaon Road, and Sectors 14, 15, and 31 were other areas that saw major water-logging. According to weathermen Delhi received 24.7 mm of rain in 12 hours till 8.30 pm on Thursday.
