Rain breaks 71-year record

The incessant rain measuring 46 mm in the last 24 hours, broke 71 years record in the city on Tuesday.

‘It is the maximum rain in winter season in 24 hours since 1942,’ said M Duraisamy of Delhi Regional Meteorological Centre. According to the records with the MeT department, the city received 46 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Tuesd ay. Another  11.2 mm of rain was received in the nine hours ending at 5.30 pm on Wednesday. The city received a 57.2 mm of rain by Tuesday evening, which is also a record for February.

The MeT official told that the city had received 104 .1 mm of rain on 21 February 1942 setting a record for rain in the winter season. Recently, in 2007, Delhi received 40.4 mm of rain on 11 February.

In the city, Mungeshpur received maximum 60 mm of rain in the past 24 hours followed by 53 mm at Lodhi Road.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 13.5 degrees which was five points above normal and maximum was four points below normal at 18.6 degrees but the wind added to the chill in the air.

The MeT department has predicted more rain with thunderstorms in the next 24 hours and lowering of the temperature by around six degree Celsius in the city. The lowest minimum temperature 07 degree Celsius is expected on Sunday which will improve by two points on Monday.

According to weathermen, besides Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana will also receive more rains till on Wednesday. The maximum and minimum temperature on Wednesday would hover around 19 and 12 degree Celsius.  

According to central control room of MCD over 32 complaints of heavy water logging were received where the civic body has to sent its rescue team. An old lady died of wall collapse in Loni in Ghaziabad.


TRAFFIC THROWN OUT OF GEAR

The heavy rain threw traffic out of gear across the city due to water logging. Vehicular movement was affected across the city including ITO, Vikas Marg, South Extension, Mahipalpur, Hari Nagar, IIT crossing to Adchini, Moti Bagh, Yusuf Sarai Market and Munirka.

Areas such as Badarpur border, Wazirpur industrial area, Ashok Vihar, Laxmi Nagar, Mahipalpur, ITO, Bhogal, Jungpura, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, Dhaula Kuan, Janakpuri, Patel Nagar, Khajurikhas and Moolchand also witnessed heavy traffic snarls.

Water-logging was also reported from Mahipalpur village following which traffic coming from Gurgaon and towards Vasant Kunj has been severely affected. The Delhi Traffic Police control room received complaints of slow movement of traffic from Bulward Road, Hakikat Nagar and various other areas in East and North Delhi.

Traffic was heavy at GTK road from Adarsh nagar to Mukarba chowk, and also in Dwarka flyover to domestic airport due to heavy water logging near the Terminal 3 area, along with places like Munirka which is towards domestic airport.

‘There was slow traffic movement in Mori Gate, Dhaula Kuan and Masjid Moth’, said a Traffic Official. ‘I was supposed to go  to Connaught Place from Laxmi Nagar. It took an hour to cross the ITO intersection today morning, where it takes only fifteen minutes everyday’, said Mehak Jain, a commuter.

‘There was almost a 3 km long traffic jam in the Ring Road area, due to the heavy water logging. As I could not board the metro to office today to Karol Bagh, I had to take my car which took me around two and half hour to reach office, where it takes only half an hour. My morning schedule for office was disturbed badly which affected my working efficiency,’ says Rajiv Shukla, an office goer.

Services were affected in the city in most parts during the peak hours of morning causing severe inconvenience to thousands of commuters who rely on the modern transport system to reach their work places.
