The Indian Railways under the leadership of Suresh Prabhu is all set to add another feather to its cap. The railways, one of the biggest consumers of energy, is set to commission the 26 MW wind energy power station soon.

The ministry has installed the new wind energy station at Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer, which is another big leap for the department, which is chasing a set target of generating 150 MW of wind-power in 5 years by utilising renewable sources of energy. The 26 MW power project, which has been divided into 13 towers producing 2MW each, has been established at the cost of Rs 153 crore.

The renewable source of energy generation initiative by railways will save about Rs 2 crore each year for the ministry.

“The trial run is on and it will be commissioned very soon after completing all the formalities. It’s a major move by the railways as the department has already installed a 10-MW wind-power project near Kanyakumari at an estimated cost of Rs 60 crore,” said Anil Saxena, spokesperson of the ministry. “Sustainability of environment is one of the biggest challenges being faced by the mankind and the entire globe is struggling to find its solution. The project will be one of the steps forward to address such challenges,” Saxena added.
