Railways inks MoU with RINL for wheel factory

Two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were signed on Friday  between the Railway ministry and PSUs under the Steel ministry — one for for doubling of the rail line from Kirandul to Jagdalpur and the other for setting up a forged wheel factory at Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh.

An MoU between Navratna company NMDC and Indian Railways was signed in the presence of Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma and Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal. The other MoU was signed between RINL and the Railways for setting up a forged wheel factory at Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh.

As per the provisions of the MoU, the 150 km Jagdalpur - Kirandul section of the Kottavalsa-Kirandul line of East Coast Railway will be doubled to augment the evacuation capacity of NMDC to meet the increased demand for iron ore of the Indian steel industry.

 'I am sure that apart from benefiting the steel industry in India, the doubling of the railway line will transform the lives of the local tribal population in Bastar, Chattisgarh, and the adjacent states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh,' said Verma.  Speaking on the forged wheel factory, he said that it would considerably increase industrial activity in the region and generate employment opportunities for the youth.  Bansal said that the MoUs are a good examples of synergy between the Railway and Steel ministries. The MoU for doubling of the rail line was signed between Railway Board Chairman Vinay Mittal and NMDC CMD C S Verma The project will be implemented by Indian Railways at a a cost of Rs 826 crore and funded by NMDC, with provisions for suitable returns through freight rebate. The Railways will make additional necessary investment in wagons, locomotives, other maintenance facilities and deployment of staff. The new line is likely to create additional traffic of up to 12 million tonne per annum (MTPA) in a phased manner.

The MoU for the forged wheel factory was signed between Railway Board Member (Mechanical) Keshav Chandra and RINL CMD A P Choudhary. The factory will have a production capacity of 1,00,000 wheels a year.

The factory, the biggest such plant in India, is scheduled to be completed in 36 months at a cost of approximately Rs 1,000 crore and will generate 500 to 600 jobs. The raw material for the factory will be supplied by RINL’s Vishakhapatnam plant in the form of continuous cast (CC) rounds.
