Update: 2014-07-09 01:27 GMT
The national capital will witness better connectivity to neighbouring cities as the NDA government announced the provision of three semi-bullet trains in the Rail Budget on Tuesday. Among nine semi-bullet trains, three are Delhi-bound. They will connect cities like Agra, Chandigarh and Kanpur to the national capital. These trains would run at 160 to 200 km per hour. Trips that usually take three to seven hours will now be completed within two hours.

Union rail minister DV Sandanada Gowda, said semi-bullet trains will be introduced on Delhi– Agra, Delhi – Kanpur and Delhi– Chandigarh routes. Existing mail/express trains between Delhi and Agra take three to four hours and cover a distance of 195 kms. Trains from New Delhi to Chandigarh take 4-6 hours to cover 266 kilometers. Similarly between Delhi and Kanpur, such trips take eight hours and cover a distance of 440 kms. Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express trains on this section takes slightly less than five hours to complete the journey. However, with introduction of such high speed trains, such distances can be covered in nearly two hours.

Earlier the trial run for the country’s first semi-bullet train on Delhi-Agra corridor was successfully conducted. The train journey took 89 minutes to achieve completion. High speed trains are likely to be introduced into regular service from November this year.

Apart from these three semi bullet trains, 10 new trains were also announced in the budget for Delhi. These include one Jansadharan Express to Saharsa in Bihar, two premium trains to Mumbai and Secunderabad and three AC special trains to cities like Vijaywada, Naharlagun and Pune. Three separate trains have been announced from Delhi to  Varanasi, Bhatinda and Gorakhpur.
The new trains include six AC express trains, 27 express trains, eight passenger trains, two Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) services and 5 Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) services, besides extensions of 11 existing trains.

The minister also announced 18 new line surveys, which include rail connectivity to ‘Char Dhams’ - Kedarnath, Badrinath, etc and connectivity to iron ore mines between Nayagarh and Banspani and Shimoga-Sringeri-Mangalore train route.

New Delhi: Now  you can order food on train journeys through SMS, email and smart phones. The government has decided to launch its pilot project on two routes, namely, New Delhi-Amritsar and New Delhi- Jammu Tavi.

This is an interesting initiative taken by the railways to make the journey more pleasant for its passengers. The railways have announced the unique facility of ordering regional cuisine through SMS or e-mail, while on the move. The initiative was announced in the Rail Budget for the year 2014-15 by union rail minister DV Sadanada Gowda on Tuesday. The pilot project has been proposed on two busy rail corridors – Delhi to Amritsar and Delhi to Jammu Tawi.
According to railway officials the required infrastructure would be soon put in place and the services would begin thereafter. As per the plan, passengers onboard these trains can place their orders in advance through SMS, e-mails or specially designed application for smart phones. On arriving at their station, the desired food will be served to the passengers. Officials further said  that the Indian Railways would set up food courts at major stations on its network to provide options for ordering regional cuisine while onboard. Once successful, the model will be implemented on other rail corridors.  ‘A pilot project will be started shortly between New Delhi - Amritsar and New Delhi - Jammu Tawi sections. The service will be beneficial for passengers on long-distance trains that travel through a number of states,’ said a spokesperson for Northern Railways.
