Following the tussle between Delhi police and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers on Tuesday, the city police on Wednesday registered two separate cases against AAP supporters. AAP and police had a scuffle during a protest led by Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet ministers near Rail Bhavan on Tuesday.
The cases have been registered at the Parliament Street police station of New Delhi district late on Tuesday evening after Kejriwal called off his protest against the Delhi police.
The FIRs, however, don’t name Kejriwal or any of his ministers and acussses unknown persons for the violence. According to the deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi), SBS Tyagi, police have lodged two cases against unknown persons for violating Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The section empowers a magistrate anywhere in the country to stop more than five people from assembling at one place and disturbing police personnel, who are performing their duty.
The violent clashes between the protesters and the police had left at least 31 persons, including 19 police officers injured.
The injured were sent to the nearby Ram Manohar Lohia hospital for medical assistance.
A senior police officer said that they are trying to identify the accused who clashed with the police with the help of more than 155 CCTV cameras installed in the area. Once the perpetrators are identified, they will be arrested.
