Rahul, Sonia visit drought-hit areas

Congress president Sonia Gandhi today visited the severely drought-hit Nagasamudra district in Karnataka.

Sonia arrived from Bangalore by helicopter, and spent about 25 minutes with the villagers, who pleaded for loan waiver and complained about non-implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) in the village.

She was moved by the plight of people who have been facing drinking water shortage and unemployment, and assured them that she will look into the problem.

Meanwhile, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi arrived in Satara in Maharashtra on Saturday morning to visit nearby drought-hit areas.

Accompanied by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and other senior ministers, Gandhi arrived from Mumbai, about 250 km away, in a helicopter, and proceeded to the Zalshi Talao, which is one of the major water sources in the district.

Last month, Chavan had visited the drought-hit areas of the state and taken stock of the grim situation in Satara, which is his home district.

Ironically, Satara is where the biggest water supply project of Maharashtra, the Koyna Dam, is located. But, barely a few kilometres away, there is acute scarcity of water virtually eight months in a year.
