Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday pleaded before the Supreme Court that a case of perjury and contempt should be initiated against a former Samajwadi Party MLA from Madhya Pradesh for his involvement in a case of illegal confinement of a girl.

Gandhi’s lawyer P P Rao said before bench of justice B S Chauhan and Justice Swatanter Kumar, ‘It is a clear case of perjury and contempt.’

The bench, however, said that for levelling these allegation a proper application has to be filed and posted the matter for final hearing on 10 September.

In an earlier counter-affidavit filed, Gandhi had submitted that the allegations made against him were ‘totally false, frivolous, vexatious and are calculated to harm my standing an image.’

Rahul had responded to the notice issued by the apex court on 16 April last year on a petition filed by a former MLA challenging Rs 50 lakh fine imposed on him by the Allahabad High Court in an alleged sexual exploitation case against him.

The former MLA had challenged the high court order claiming it to be illegal and arbitrary and issued without application of mind. He wanted the fine to be waived.

The Supreme Court had stayed the high court order which had directed a CBI probe against the former legislator.

Later the former MLA had reportedly filed an affidavit claiming that he had filed the petition in the High Court at the behest of Samajwadi Party.
