Question paper fiascoes: More proof to establish DU-tutorial liaison

Update: 2014-12-08 23:51 GMT
The allegations of a tie-up between tutorial centres on campus teaching commerce students and those in the Delhi University examination branch responsible for leaking of questions papers have been further strengthened after emergence of fresh evidence. Earlier this year, a ‘fiasco’ similar to the one which happened on November 27, had taken place. A formal complaint was lodged by the head of question setters with the varsity vice-chancellor Dinesh Singh, head of commerce department of Delhi School of Economics JP Sharma and the dean of examinations, but to no avail.

The incident relates to providing last year’s Income Tax Law and Practice Paper No- XIII vide serial number 5789 to the students of B Com (Hons) II Year annual mode examination held on June 13 this year.

In the ‘glaring mistake’ which was committed by the examination branch, the question paper set of Income Tax Law and Practice which was provided to the students of 2013-14, which was meant for the students of earlier academic session 2012-13.

The complainant had further explained to the authorities that in the Income Tax Law paper, students are taught and examined according to the provisions relevant for current academic session that is treating 2013-14 as relevant assessment year for the students of session 2013-14.

“If the students are asked to answer the question based on the provisions of either earlier assessment year or subsequent assessment year, it is to be treated as unwarranted and hence unjustified. Under these circumstances, university is advised to instruct the examiners not to penalize the students. Answers based on assessment year 2012-13 as also 2013-14 should be treated equally correct,” the complainant had said in the letter written to Dean of Examinations of June 14 this year.
However, none in the university cared to reply to the complaint. The matter of such ‘fiascoes’ has been taken up now following the recent exposé in media of the shenanigans going on in the examination branch, which once again released an ‘old paper’ in the ongoing semester examination.

The dean of the Examination Branch refused to interact on the matter whereas despite several attempts to contact Sharma through telephone calls and text messages, the head of commerce department of Delhi School of Economics remained incommunicado.
