An under-trial prisoner was shot dead by a man in the premises of the district court in Surajpur, Greater Noida on Tuesday. The prisoner, Sanjay Anand, was brought from Tihar jail in New Delhi to the court for a hearing in a case of loot registered against him at the Sector 20 police station in Noida.
According to Brijesh Singh, SP (Rural), as Sanjay reached the premises of the court an unidentified armed man fired at him and tried to escape. Sanjay suffered bullet injuries in his back and abdomen. He was rushed to Kailash Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
Meanwhile, Delhi police personnel with the help of advocates present in the court managed to get hold of the attacker and beat him to a pulp. He has been undergoing treatment in the Kailash Hospital where his situation is said to be critical. The police recovered a country-made pistol and revolver from him.
‘The attacker has yet not been identified. We are waiting for him to gain consciousness so that we can question him and investigate the matter,’ Singh said.
Sanjay, a resident of Najafgarh in Delhi, had more than half a dozen cases of loot and robbery cases registered against him. The fatal attack has once again raised questions on the law and order situation in the area.
