Prison platter: It’s rajma chawal for Sreesanth in police custody on Friday

Update: 2013-05-18 02:19 GMT
Rajasthan Royals player S Sreesanth was the only one who went without dinner, even as his two team mates along with the 11 bookies arrested for allegedly spot fixing IPL matches, had a hearty meal on Thursday night in police custody.

But the fast bowler had rajma-chawal for brunch, police sources said on Friday. When Sreesanth was arrested from Trident Nariman Point Hotel in Mumbai late on Wednesday, he was with a woman. Police refused to give more details about her.

They also ruled out her involvement in spot fixing.

Sreesanth and his two Rajasthan Royals team mates Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan along with 11 bookies were arrested on Wednesday night from different locations for spot fixing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.

They were remanded to five days' police custody and are lodged in the Special Cell office of Delhi police at Lodhi Colony.

While all the three players were lodged together in one cell, the rest were warded in another cell. They were given mattresses to sleep on. 'Sreesanth refused dinner on Thursday night. We asked him whether he wanted food on Friday morning. When he said yes, we offered him rajma-chawal and he agreed. This was his first meal in custody. He had it around 11 am,' a source said. It was not known what the others ate.

After his meal, Sreesanth was also questioned by Delhi police commissioner Neeraj Kumar.
Police sources said all the three cricketers have confessed to their crime. But their families and lawyers have denied the allegations.

‘BOOKIES HAD BEEN TRACKING PLAYERS SINCE DECEMBER, MAINTAINED DIARIES ON EACH’

A highly placed source in the Delhi police Special Cell told Millennium Post on Friday that a case study of Indian cricketers had been initiated by bookies since December 2012. A proper chart was maintained mentioning the likes and dislikes of the cricketers.

Top bookies, including Chandresh Patel alias Jupiter and Jiju Janardhan, a distant relative of S Sreesanth, who is accused of spot-fixing, were instructed to maintain a dairy on each cricketer. Sources said, ‘After the data was completed by the bookies, a meeting took place with D-company. It is yet to be clarified who all attended the meeting in Dubai.’

During the meeting, sources said, a few cricketers were selected by the underworld on the basis of their weaknesses. Sreesanth was their first choice, as he was more willing to do advertisements and shows to earn money. As Jiju is a distant relative of Sreesanth and knew him personally, he was asked to lure him.

Sreesanth told investigators that Jiju approached him in March with an offer for an ad shoot. Quoting Sreesanth, the source said, ‘I agreed to his proposal. A party was conducted in Mumbai before the IPL by Jiju basically to conduct a meeting with the advertiser, who was a bookie, but I was lured into spot fixing and the deal was made’  According to sources, a few parties were thrown abroad but the targeted cricketers did not come to attend those parties. One of the parties was held in Sri Lanka where call girls were also brought to entertain the players.
