Pressure mounts: DCW summons Somnath Bharti

Update: 2014-01-23 23:37 GMT
The Delhi Commission for Women has summoned law minister Somnath Bharti to depose before it over allegations of manhandling of some Ugandan women by a group led by him during a midnight raid in South Delhi.

Five Ugandan women have recorded their complaints with the Commission alleging that they had been man-handled by the minister and his associates on 15 January night, DCW chairperson Barkha Singh said on Wednesday.

‘We had asked him to appear before the Commission yesterday (Tuesday) but he did not show up. We will be sending another summon to him through the SHO concerned. If he still does not appear, we shall write to the Lieutenant Governor and to the Delhi police commissioner,’ she added.

Singh said three of the Ugandan women have claimed that unknown persons had forcibly entered their house in the middle of the night asking for their passports and started searching their suitcases.

The women have alleged that they were made to take off their clothes while checking for the key, Singh said.

‘Two of the Ugandan women have stated that they were stopped while returning from work and forced to give urine samples while sitting in a taxi,’ Singh said.

On the night of 15 January, Bharti and AAP volunteers had reached Khirki Extension and conducted a raid on houses of Nigerian and Ugandan nationals.

Bharti claimed that the raid had been conducted after he received information about a prostitution-and-drugs racket in the area.

Meanwhile, Bharti on Wednesday evaded the media while stating that he was yet to receive any notice from the DCW asking him to depose before it in connection with the case. ‘I am yet to receive any notice from the (Delhi) Women’s Commission,’ was all Bharti had to say to reporters.

Danish woman rape: Arti Mehra files complaint

NEW DELHI:
Troubles for Delhi law and labour minister just seem be mounting with former mayor and BJP’s national secretary filing a complaint against Somnath Bharti for revealing the name of Danish gang-rape victim.

Speaking to Millennium Post, Mehra said, ‘Being a law minister, he has violated the law as laid by the Indian Penal Code by revealing the identity of the rape victim. Aam Aadmi Party is hiding its minister’s mistake by alleging it an accidental incident and a slip of tongue.’

A handwritten complaint has been filed at Hauz Khas police station alleging that Somnath must be booked under section 228A (disclosure of identity of the victim) of IPC.  While addressing media persons after the gang rape, Bharti had revealed the name of the 51-year-old Danish woman. ‘I have spoken to the Danish ambassador on the issue and he was shocked that the law minister himself is disclosing victim’s identity. After meeting him and being a woman social activist, I have decided to approach the police station to file a complaint in this matter,’ she added.

BS Jaiswal, deputy commissioner of police (south) said, ‘At around 11.30 am, we received a complaint from Arti Mehra. We have asked her to provide us the CD of the incident. In the evening, she has submitted a CD of a private channel that was telecasting the live footage of the conference addressed by Bharti.’
