Powerlist: AAP’s LS 20 to take on the powerful

The list expectedly includes name of humourist-poet Kumar Vishwas, who would take on Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi from Amethi. The other prominent names in the list are former banker Meera Sanyal and social activist Medha Patkar from Mumbai. Tribal activist from Chhattisgarh, Soni Sori, a surprise last-minute addition to the list of 20, has been pitched against Dinesh Kashyap of the BJP in Bastar.

The list, which comes two days after Kejriwal quit as Delhi CM, carries names of candidates from Delhi (2), Uttar Pradesh (7), Maharashtra (6), Haryana, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab – one each. TV journalist-turned-politician Ashutosh will contest from Chandni Chowk seat in Delhi held by union minister Kapil Sibal. Another prominent face to have joined AAP after formation of its government in Delhi, advocate HS Phoolka, has been accommodated from Ludhiana. The seat is currently held by I&B Minister Manish Tewari, whereas Phoolka has played a major role in getting relief for the anti-Sikh riots victim.

Another activist related in bringing relief to the anti-Sikh riot victims Jarnail Singh, has been fielded from West Delhi seat. Singh threw a shoe at FM P Chidambaram protesting grant of ticket to riot accused Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar by Congress on the eve of 2009 polls. Following the incident both Kumar and Tytler were replaced.

In UP, it has former scribe Mukul Tripathi from Farrukhabad seat, the constituency held by union minister Salman Khurshid. Activist Hardev Singh has been given ticket in Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav’s stronghold Mainpuri. Somendra Dhaka, a peasant leader, will contest from Baghpat, the traditional seat of Union Minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh.

In Maharashtra, AAP has fielded anti-corruption activist Anjali Damania from Nagpur against former BJP national president Nitin Gadkari. ‘Our main motto is to send honest people to Parliament. We do not want to send criminals, people with dynastic background. We will soon release the list of candidates for other seats,’ senior party leader Manish Sisodia told reporters here. Meera Sanyal, former CEO and chairperson of RBS India, will contest from South Mumbai, a seat currently represented by union minister Milind Deora. Social worker Medha Patkar has been fielded from North East Mumbai, an NCP seat.
