PowerGrid completes Phase 1 of North East-Agra link

State-run Power Grid Corporation Ltd has completed the first phase of its Rs 12,000-crore transmission line of 6,000 <g data-gr-id="13">mw</g> capacity between <g data-gr-id="14"><g data-gr-id="25">north</g> eastern</g> region and Agra. “The first pole (phase) of the 1,730-km-long 800 <g data-gr-id="15">kv</g> HVDC (<g data-gr-id="16">high voltage</g> direct current) transmission line has been completed and power can flow in either direction,” PowerGrid Corp CMD R N Nayak told reporters in a press briefing here on Tuesday.

Naik said that this transmission link will help in getting <g data-gr-id="29">supply</g> of surplus power from <g data-gr-id="30"><g data-gr-id="31">north</g></g> eastern region during monsoon to north and western India, whereas in winters it will be vice versa. During winters, availability of water is reduced in the <g data-gr-id="17">north eastern</g> region and <g data-gr-id="18">hydro power</g> generation goes down. A senior PowerGrid official said the entire project of 6,000 <g data-gr-id="19">mw</g> capacity will be operational by August 2016 with <g data-gr-id="27">completion</g> of second, third and fourth phases. The 1,750-km of HVDC line traverses through very difficult terrain in three regions and four states, crossing more than 40 rivers. 

This high-capacity transmission link is the world s largest <g data-gr-id="21">multi terminal</g> 800kV HVDC project which comprises of 3,000 <g data-gr-id="20">mw</g> HVDC terminals at Biswanath Chariyali and Alipurduar each and a 6,000 <g data-gr-id="22">mw</g> terminal at Agra.
