In an interesting development. two ministers in Mamata Banerjee’s Cabinet resigned on Thursday, post reshuffle of the Cabinet on Wednesday which saw the Chief Minister of West Bengal inducting eight new ministers.
While Shyamal Mondal as MoS for Sunderban Affairs was stripped of his ministerial berth on Wednesday, Agriculture Minister, Rabindranath Bhattacharya was shifted to the Department of Statistics and Programme Implementation. Both resigned. ‘The axe had to fall on somebody. Bhattacharya was ailing and that was a perhaps a deciding factor’, said a senior TMC MP.
Manturam Pakhira replaced Shyamal Mondal as MoS for Sunderban Affairs and has been given independent charge.Mondal expressed surprise at being dropped though. ‘I think my performance as Suderbans minister was satisfactory’, he told the media. TMC top brass offered another explanation though. ‘Our Chief Minister demands just one thing from her ministers, absolute sincerity.
