Police to deploy drones to monitor traffic in UP-NCR

Update: 2015-04-08 23:29 GMT
The UP police, while announcing the move, said that camera fitted drones will perform a special task apart from functioning as eyes in the sky – that is, the district police will also use them for dispersing mobs.

As part of police modernisation, UP Police had announced to deploy drones in major districts of the state. The police department has identified a few sensitive districts in Central and West UP, which are infamous for riots, hooliganism and mismanaged crowds.

The drones will be managed by the control rooms of the district police. “The police department has purchased drone cameras with the capacity of lifting two kilos of weight. They can also be used to shower pepper powder on unruly mobs in case of trouble. As per the initial plan, four to five drones will be given to each district. If things go well, the state police will be the first in the country to have such hi-tech surveillance gadgets,” said a senior police official.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVS), also known as drones, are air-crafts, either controlled by pilots from the ground or they follow a pre-programmed mission. The UAVs have propellers spinning at the end of its eight spidery arms. The drones, which can cost up to Rs 6 lakh each, can fly up to 600 metres within a one-kilometre radius.

The drone cameras made their debut in the state during the Muzaffarnagar riots. The district administration of Lucknow had also used the device during Muharram, Lucknow Mahotsav and Republic Day Parade. Recently, the police used drone cameras in Ayodhya to monitor Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s ‘Ram Mahotsava’ on the occasion of Ram Navami.

“We have used drones during Magh Mela and Kumbh Mela in the past. Now, these are going to be used mainly to keep an eye out for trouble,” said AK Jain, Director General of Police (DGP), Uttar Pradesh while speaking to media persons.
