Pocket pinch: Auto & taxi rides to get dearer from today

After getting the  Delhi Cabinet approval on Wednesday, the transport department on Friday issued a notification to announce a  hike in fares of auto-rickshaws and black a nd yellow taxis in the national capital. The new rates will come into effect from Saturday, 4 May.

However, Delhi transport minister Ramakant Goswami, on Friday said that after the implementation of revised fares, if any auto-rickshaw or taxis driver is found refusing passengers and the passenger files a complaint against the errant driver, the driver’s auto/taxi permit can be cancel led.

He added that he is going call a high-level meeting on Monday, inwhich Delhi traffic police additional commissioner, DCP, members of the Delhi Auto-rickshaw Union and the Delhi transport commissioner are expected to be present.

Goswami said  that the decision on how to punish errant drivers who do not follow rules and try to charge extra from passengers will be taken in the next meeting.

The minister said that Delhi auto-rickshaw drivers always flout rules.  ‘The department expects auto/taxi drivers to help commuters reach their destinations. They are also expected to charge as per the meter
reading,’ said Goswami.

Goswami added that  the Delhi Cabinet had  decided to hike the fares by up to 25 per cent in view of increase in CNG prices in the past three years.

The base fare for autos has been raised from Rs 19 for the first two kilometers to Rs 25, while for every subsequent kilometer, travelers will have to pay Rs 8 as against the old fare of Rs 6.50.

Taxi commuters will have to shell out  Rs 25 for the first kilometer as against the old Rs 20.

The charges for every subsequent kilometer will be Rs 14 for non-AC taxis as against the old rate of Rs 11. The air-conditioned taxis will charge Rs 16 per subsequent kilometer instead of Rs 13.

In order to facilitate calibration of meters across the city, the department has instructed the meter manufacturers/suppliers to pull-up their socks to calibrate meters.
