The Delhi government supposedly ordered a thorough quality checking of all infrastructure projects after the intervention by the chief vigilance commissioner. Yet, one of the the escalators at the Srinivaspuri foot over bridge still remain non-functional. According to the residents nearby, one part of the escalator has been stolen.
Nehru Vihar Resident Welfare Association's president Tilak Raj Khurana said, 'The escalators have been lying like this since the Commonwealth Games. As per the contractual agreement, it is the responsibility of the contractor to replace the stolen parts. We had asked the contractor to do so to avoid them from being blacklisted. But we are told that as the parts stolen have to be imported, it will take time to procure them. But the escalators should be repaired by the Public Works Department (PWD) contractor.'
According to him, from the beginning, one side of the escalator was not installed properly. Despite repeated complaints made to the Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit and MP Sandeep Dikshit, no concrete action has been taken yet.
Meanwhile, foot overbridges (FOB) in many parts of the city, which were constructed at a cost of several crores, are lying in a state of neglect as the PWD is yet to install escalators in these FOBs. In fact, in areas like Srinivaspuri where the FOB was constructed along the ring road, its parts have been stolen and the escalator is lying on the roadside gathering dust.
The PWD minister Raj Kumar Chauhan has given the assurance that appropriate action will be taken after proper investigation.
The civic body has sent a notice to the contractor to complete the pending work. Failure to do so might result in the contractor getting blacklisted.
Meanwhile, the civic body admitted that some of the FOBs in the city were under utilised and claimed that they are now going to build more FOBs with lifts or escalators to ensure that the pedestrians use them.
