The issues of hiking parking rates and making a wider section of the city paid parking zones have take a political turn. City civic bodies headed by the BJP are against the proposal, while the Congress-lead Delhi government is hell bent on announcing the decision on the issue at the earliest. Both parties want to play it safe keeping in mind the assembly elections next year.
‘This is a conspiracy of the Delhi government. The government wants to represent the civic bodies as villain, since it is the civic body that will be responsible as they will be responsible for implementing the increase rates and other provisions of the new parking policy. The government is doing this exercise to spoil the image of the municipal corporations but it will never succeed in this. The implementation of the parking policy is in our hands and we will have the final word on the proposal,’ said a senior leader of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC).
‘We are committed not to increase parking or property tax rates or any other tax rate in the city which could add extra burden to the citizens, already burdened by inflation,’ he added. Office-bearers of the BJP in the three municipal corporations have already started preparing their counterpoints to oppose the government order when it comes in the form of the commissioner’s letter in the meeting of the standing committee or the house.
The new parking policy is being framed by the Supreme Court-appointed Environment Pollution Control Authority headed by Bhure Lal. The committee in a meeting with the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on Thursday proposed manifold increase in the parking rates including parking charges on the colony roads and other public lands on which all the stake holders including officials of the Delhi government and municipal commissioners are agreed.
