Parking woes: Contractors fined for flouting norms

In a surprise raid on Tuesday, North Delhi Municipal Corporation penalised five parking contractors at Karol Bagh zone with a hefty sum of Rs 7 lakh for non-compliance of various norms laid down by the civic body for running parking lots.

The parking lots were raided by the chairman of Karol Bagh ward committee Rajesh Bhatia and deputy commissioner of Karol Bagh zone Dharmendra Kumar at Ghaffar Market, Ajmal Khan Road, Arya Samaj Road, Padam Singh Road, Saraswati Marg and PVR Naraina.

At Ajmal Khan Road, two parking sites were raided. Four persons have been caught from this parking lot for illegally charging money. The one that was an authorised parking area at Ajmal Khan Road was found violating norms such as overcharging up to Rs 100 per car, without handheld device and lack of display boards mentioning details of parking and the contractor.

At Ghaffar Market, the parking was being done beyond permissible limits; the attendants seemed to have been hired by the contractor without police verification. The attendants were handed over to the local police to verify the same. At Arya Samaj Road and Padam Singh Road parking sites also, two attendants each were caught and handed over to the police. The attendants were also penalised for overcharging and violations like not wearing prescribed uniforms, without handheld devices and the like. At PVR Naraina parking, situated opposite the police station, eight attendants were caught and handed over to the police for verification. Overcharging and violation of other rules were also found here.
