Oxygen cylinder explosion kills 2 workers, 3 others injured

In a major incident, two workers died while three others including two teen-aged girls suffered minor injuries when an oxygen cylinder exploded at a refilling unit in North-east Delhi’s Mustafabad area on Friday morning. The deceased persons have been identified as Ganga Singh (30) and Firoz (28). According to senior police officials, the explosion was so severe that their remains were seen scattered around the blast site.

According to the fire department officials, the incident took place at around 11.40 am in the cylinder refilling unit when Singh was loading the cylinders while Firoz was working on some papers for a particular supply behind the single-storey unit.

The cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained. The police said that the glass windows of the nearby houses were also shattered along with the single-storey unit. Meanwhile, the boundary walls partially collapsed due to the impact of the blast. The locals informed the police and the fire department was also called up.

According to a cop, the two girls who have been injured were going to school when the explosion took place. A disaster management team and fire officials immediately reached the spot to carry out rescue operations. Police said that after receiving news of the explosion as well as death of his two employees, the owner of the cylinder refilling unit suffered a heart attack. A case has been registered at the Gokulpuri police station under relevant sections of the IPC.
