Over 60 students were injured when a private school bus plunged into a ditch in Perambalur city of Tamil Nadu on Thursday.

The accident took place around 8: 30am when the bus was heading towards a school, after picking up students, police said. The injured students (boys and girls) were rushed to a hospital. The Tamil Nadu police have arrested the errant bus driver. He was arrested from the accident site, police said.

Earlier it was being said that 50 students were injured in the accident. However, later, it came to light that over 60 were injured. The accident took place when the school bus hit a median and fell into the ditch near the collector’s office. Students alleged that the driver was speeding. They also accused him of rash driving.

Hearing about the accident, parents of all students, aboard the school bus, gathered outside the hospital.

The parents and the students have alleged that there were about 127 students on the bus, which is against the norms. However, the headmaster of the school claims that only 63 students were on the bus when the accident occurred, adding that this was the first accident.

District official Munuswamy called for a meeting to discuss the accident with the private school.
