Orphaned students to be part of 25% EWS category

Delhi Government has included the orphans under the provision of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009, under which the private as well as the public schools are supposed to enroll 25 per cent from the economically weaker sections.

Tejendra Khanna, Governor of Delhi, has amended the act by including orphaned students.

D K Bedi, Principal of Apeejay School, said, ‘Earlier, orphaned children did not benefit from the free education scheme in private schools, but now this move would be able to reduce their problem and I am happy that Delhi government has given them this opportunity.’

A few months ago, the social activists and educational academicians were fighting for the cause and had written several letters to the Delhi chief minister, requesting the government to include the orphaned children in this category.
