Delhi International Arts Festival (DIAF) is now recognised all over the World as India’s International Festival. This iconic Festival of arts that showcases all art forms from Music, Dance, Theatre, Visual Arts, Films, International performances and traditional arts and crafts from several Countries will run in the Capital from 8 February until 23 February.
The opening at the Purana Qila will witness colourful performances by the Manipuri dancers, Egyptian National Dance Troupe, Sri Lankan National Dance Troupe, Kashmiri dances, and music by the Langas and the Manganiars from Rajasthan who will perform in fusion with the ‘Kings of Creole’ -Hety & Zambo from Columbia.
The two-week Festival includes several rare and hitherto unseen performances brought in from remote parts of Kerala, Assam, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal and several others. Martial Art forms of Kalari from Kerala and Chhau from Odisha will also be showcased.
Literature events include panel, discussions and talks at the Sahitya Akademi. Iranian illumination artistes and craftsmen will demonstrate at the National Museum and the Crafts Museum.
Of the Film Festivals, ‘Hollywood Blockbuster Week’ at the American Centre will feature some the most recent films that have been nominated for the Oscars like White House Down, Walter Mitty ,Elysium and others.
‘Remembering Pran and Farooque Shaik’ will see several popular films of these actors at the Habitat Centre.
Award Winning Childrens’ films will be screened at the National Museum to expose children to the rich cultural heritage of India.
Demonstrations of almost extinct art forms of Simhanandini and Mayura Kauthuvam will find space in Kala Kuteer, Lalit Kala Akademi.
Theatre enthusiasts can look forward to the staging of Abhignana Shakuntala directed by KN Pannikar at the National School of Drama and a Spanish Play Holiday Out at the Institute of Cervantes.
For classical music lovers, a Dhrupad Festival will be held at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts on the 21 and 22 February which features famous musicians from all over India like Ustad Wasiffudin Dagar, Ustad Hussain Sayeeduddin Dagar, Pt Uday Bhawalkar and others.
The finale will be on the 23 February at 6.30 pm with a Sufi/Qawwali Night, which brings on stage the famous Warsi Qawwals of Hyderabad and Bharkat Sidhu from Punjab.
