Police on Sunday arrested Bijoy Rana on charges of chopping off the legs of a Trinamool Congress leader Sanjay Roy.

It may be recalled that on March 13 Roy’s leg was chopped off after being beaten up by the miscreants when he returned to his home at Tangra after a few months. He was then dragged to the nearby railway tracks where both of his legs were chopped off. Police said that the accused Rana was arrested from Debendra Chandra Dey Street at Tangra. The accused had been absconding since the incident took place. Police had failed to arrest him despite conducting raids at various places. Finally on Saturday late night, acting on a tip off, police conducted a raid and arrested him from the residence of one of his friends. Sources said that he came to the area to get money. The accused has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on charges of attempting murder. Meanwhile, in connection with the murder of another Trinamool Congress leader from Baguiati, the police have arrested one Bapi Raman. He was arrested from Kestopur in connection with the murder of Sanjay Roy. Roy was shot dead in the busy area near Jagatpur Auto-rickshaw stand on February 25. Senior Trinamool Congress leaders including Purnendu Bose met the victim’s family members.   Earlier, the police had arrested 5 more persons in this connection and they came to know about Bapi after interrogating them. During interrogation they also revealed that an old rivalry led to the crime.

Roy had raised his voice against illegal construction of high rises and it led to the rivalry. The accused in whose house the plan to kill Roy was chalked was also arrested. A police officer said that one or two more persons will get arrested soon in this connection.
